The Archdiocese of Brisbane has a long tradition of fostering the participation and engagement of young people in the life of the Church. In the Archdiocesan Synod of 2003, a major focus of consultation, discussion and action proposals was the engagement of young people. Furthermore, the unique opportunity for renewal in the Australian Church presented by World Youth Day Sydney 2008 has led to Archbishop Bathersby’s announcement of a strategic focus on ministry with young people so that preparations for and participation in WYD 08 builds a rich legacy of vibrant ministry with young people for the future.
Consequently, this statement outlines principles for ministry with young people in this Archdiocese and proposes a ministry framework for ongoing planning and development. It provides parishes, deaneries, schools and movements with a broad direction and a common focus to guide their initiatives as they seek to respond to, engage with and animate the spiritual life of young people. It is presented as a dynamic framework based on the wisdom gathered from youth ministry practitioners and consultations over many years. The hopes and dreams that underpin this framework will be realised through the experience of its use in the Archdiocese in the years to come.
